Flashcards work because they force you to recall an answer instead of recognising it on a page. Toppers in NEET and UPSC use them daily. Here is how to start in 10 minutes.
What goes on a card
- Front: one question, term or formula name
- Back: one answer, 1–3 lines, plus a memory hook
- One idea per card. ‘All formulas of AP’ is not a card; ‘Sum of n terms of an AP’ is.
Sample cards
| Front | Back |
|---|---|
| Ohm’s law? | V = IR; valid at constant temperature |
| Enzyme in saliva? | Salivary amylase — starch → maltose |
| Battle of Plassey? | 1757, Clive vs Siraj-ud-Daulah |
| cos 2A (three forms)? | cos²A − sin²A = 2cos²A − 1 = 1 − 2sin²A |
| Article 21A? | Right to Education (6–14 years) |
The Leitner box method
- Box 1: new/wrong cards — revise daily
- Box 2: known once — every 3 days
- Box 3: known twice — weekly
- A wrong answer sends the card back to Box 1
Paper vs digital
Paper is better for diagrams and formulas you must write. Digital (Anki-style apps, or flashcards generated by an AI doubt solver) is better for GK, biology facts and revising on the bus.
How many per day
Make 10–15 cards per chapter. Review 30–50 cards a day; it takes 15 minutes.
