Minerals and Energy Resources Class 10 Notes (Geography Ch 5)

Minerals and Energy Resources is Chapter 5 of Class 10 Geography (Contemporary India II). It looks big because of many names and places, but the pattern of questions is fixed: classification of minerals, iron ore belts, one or two other minerals, and conventional vs non-conventional energy. What is a mineral?

A mineral is a naturally occurring substance with a definite internal structure. Rocks are made of minerals. Minerals are unevenly spread over India, and once mined they cannot be made again quickly — so they are called exhaustible or non-renewable resources.

Classification of minerals

  • Metallic minerals — give metals on processing.
    • Ferrous (contain iron): iron ore, manganese, nickel, cobalt.
    • Non-ferrous (no iron): copper, bauxite, lead, zinc, gold.
  • Non-metallic minerals: mica, limestone, gypsum, and also coal and petroleum (fossil fuels are non-metallic).

Important minerals and where they are found

Iron ore is the backbone of industry. Magnetite is the best quality with up to about 70 percent iron; hematite is the most used industrial ore with 50 to 60 percent iron. Manganese is used to make steel and bleaching powder. Copper is used in electric wires because it conducts electricity well; main areas are Balaghat (Madhya Pradesh), Khetri (Rajasthan) and Singhbhum (Jharkhand). Bauxite is the ore of aluminium; important areas are the Amarkantak plateau and the Panchpatmali deposits of Koraput, Odisha. Mica can split into thin sheets and does not conduct electricity, so the electronic industry needs it; the Koderma–Gaya–Hazaribagh belt of Jharkhand is the main producer. Limestone is the basic raw material of the cement industry.

Conservation of minerals

Minerals took millions of years to form and are being used very fast. Conservation means using them in a planned way: recycling metals, using scrap, finding substitutes, and using improved technology so that low-grade ores can also be used with less waste.

Conventional sources of energy

  • Coal: the most used fuel in India. Grades by carbon content — lignite (low grade, Neyveli in Tamil Nadu), bituminous (most used, Jharia and Raniganj) and anthracite (highest quality).
  • Petroleum: fuel plus raw material for many industries. Main areas: Mumbai High (offshore, largest share), Gujarat (Ankleshwar) and Assam (Digboi, the oldest oil field).
  • Natural gas: a cleaner fuel found with or without petroleum; used in power, fertiliser and as CNG in vehicles.
  • Electricity: hydroelectricity from running water and thermal power from coal, oil and gas.

Non-conventional sources of energy

These are renewable and cleaner. Solar energy suits India because most of the country gets strong sunlight. Wind energy — the Tamil Nadu belt from Nagercoil to Madurai is well known. Biogas is made from animal and farm waste; gobar gas plants give fuel plus good manure. Tidal energy is possible in the Gulf of Khambhat and Gulf of Kachchh. Geothermal energy uses the heat of the earth, as at Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh.

Conservation of energy

India imports a large part of its fuel, so saving energy is saving money. Simple habits count as exam points: use public transport, switch off unused devices, use energy-efficient appliances, and shift towards renewable sources.
